Decluttering the Mind & Space: My Mid-Term Break Reflections
Mid-term break has looked a little different for me this year. Instead of relaxing completely, I found myself in the middle of a much-needed decluttering mission—sorting through bags of clothes and shoes, ready to donate to charity. There’s something so freeing about clearing out the old to make space for the new.
But alongside that, life still happened. My son has been unwell with a persistent cough all week, I had a follow-up hospital appointment linked to a chest infection from last year, and I also made sure to take some intentional time to rest. It’s easy to get caught up in the “to-do” list, but I’ve been reminded again how important it is to balance responsibility with self-care.
Decluttering Isn’t Just About Stuff
As I bagged up clothes, I realised that decluttering isn’t just about our physical space—it’s about what we hold onto emotionally too. We carry worries, stress, and expectations, often without realising how heavy they’ve become. Sometimes, we need to let go—of things, of pressures, of past experiences that no longer serve us.
But I’ll be honest—I found the decluttering process completely overwhelming. Looking at the sheer amount of stuff to sort through was daunting, and I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I needed support, so I asked my mum for help. And I’m so glad I did. We all need support sometimes, whether it’s for practical tasks or emotional challenges, and that’s okay. We shouldn’t beat ourselves up for needing help—we’re not meant to do everything on our own.
Who is your support system? Do they know how much they mean to you? If you’re feeling overwhelmed, is there someone you can reach out to? Sometimes, simply recognising who we can turn to is a powerful first step.
That’s why having a space to talk and reflect is so valuable. Whether it’s through journaling, conversations with a trusted friend, or joining a support group, creating space for your thoughts can be just as important as tidying your home.
A New Space for Support
As well as decluttering, I’ve also been focusing on spreading the word about my new women’s support group, starting on 27th February in Whitburn. This group is for women who need a safe, non-judgmental space to share, reflect, and connect with others. If you’ve been feeling like you need some space to breathe and process, you’re more than welcome to join us.
